Launch + Projects Pending

Today's the day.  The day I launch the blog I've been planning for-e-ver.  Thanks for being here for the inaugural post!  Chances are we're already acquainted.  If not, head over to my About page for my story.

I thought I'd write a little about what I'll be doing here and why.  Creativity is essential to who I am.  I love making things (from scratch!) and I really enjoy seeing what other people are making.  I've been blog-loving for years, getting inspiration from others.  I decided it's finally time for me to share some of my own projects.  I see it both as a way to document my days and a method for connecting with others.

Now, what exactly am I making from scratch?

Food

"Eat Food.  Not too much.  Mostly plants." -Michael Pollan

Cooking is the art I engage in literally everyday.  I truly never tire of it.  Even when I was working long hours in restaurant kitchens, I still cooked at home on my days off.  I like to make seasonal, fresh, wholesome food for my family.  I'm also passionate about cultivating practices that seem to be dying out in recent generations; things like canning, fermenting, and baking bread.  While I will be posting recipes, I'll often focus on the methods behind what I make.  I think it's so important to know how to adapt a recipe based on what you have, what's in season, and what you actually like to eat.  We eat a lot of fresh vegetables because we love them.  Almost as much as we love cookies.

Projects

"By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired." -Franz Kafka

I create because I want to be surrounded by the kinds of things that make me happy and that make my loved ones feel at home.  Though I've never been much good at drawing or sculpting, I've always been a crafter.  I like to pick out elements that will become a focal point in a room, a unique wrapping for a gift, or a canvas for memories.  Sewing and quilting are new passions of mine and I'm excited to share my progress there.  And like many new homeowners on a budget, I've been having a lot of fun remaking old furniture.

I have a couple of projects in the works right now.

First up:  Whipping this back yard, affectionately known as District 12, into shape.  Spring snuck up on us this year so we need to get to building raised beds, composting, and collecting rainwater.

I want this little postage stamp to be a food producing, sustainable oasis.  Something more like this.

My sweet babe has a birthday in just two weeks!  I'll be working on a first birthday dress for her using this fat quarter bundle from Fresh Modern Fabric and this tutorial.

Inspiration

“Blessed is the influence of one true, loving human soul on another.” -George Eliot

My creativity is inspired by the places and events in my life, but never more so than the people I am fortunate to love.  My life is about family and they're the ones for whom I do all this, so there will be a healthy dose of milestones and gatherings documented here.

Thanks again for being here.  I look forward to making this journey with you.
